Cloudera Survey Finds 95% Delayed or Canceled AI Projects Over Governance Issues
Cloudera released its global survey, “The Great AI Re-Architecture,” focusing on how organizations redesign data architectures to support AI across hybrid environments. The results describe how legacy data architectures have constrained efforts to scale AI in areas tied to governance and compliance.
The survey drew responses from 1,500 Enterprise Architects, Cloud Infrastructure Leads, and Data Architects worldwide. It found that 77% of organizations actively used AI, while 95% delayed or canceled AI initiatives over the past year due to data governance, compliance, or regulatory challenges. It also reported that 72% said their current data architecture required a significant overhaul to meet future AI requirements.
Cloudera attributed these findings to an increase in AI workloads and distributed data practices. Seventy-five percent of respondents said AI integrations changed data storage and architecture practices, and 84% reported increased infrastructure costs driven by AI workloads. Nearly every respondent (97%) reported moving data between environments at least monthly across cloud, private cloud, on-premises, and edge environments, with 73% saying AI made data governance more complex.
The research described governance delays as a recurring issue, with more than half (55%) reporting delaying or canceling more than six AI projects over the past 12 months due to governance, compliance, or regulatory challenges. Cloudera also reported that two-thirds (66%) said they moved AI workloads from public cloud environments back to private cloud or on-premises infrastructure during the past year. Sergio Gago, Chief Technology Officer at Cloudera, said, “Many enterprises are discovering that the architectures built for traditional analytics weren't designed for the scale, governance, and flexibility AI demands today. Success will depend on building a data foundation that gives organizations the freedom to run AI wherever it makes the most sense, without compromising control or security.” Looking ahead, one-quarter (25%) said they planned to prioritize a hybrid-first architecture over the next two years.
