Cloudera published “The Data Readiness Index 2026,” a research report that focuses on barriers to scaling AI in manufacturing. The findings connect gaps in data governance and workflow integration to why AI and analytics initiatives do not meet expected ROI.

The report said 82% of manufacturing respondents reported visibility into where their data resided, but only 58% reported that all or nearly all of their data was fully governed. It also reported that 20% of manufacturing organizations cited weak integration of AI and analytics into operational workflows as the leading reason initiatives failed to deliver expected ROI.

Cloudera described the operational challenge of translating AI insights into action when data and processes were distributed across factories, supply chains, enterprise applications, and edge environments. It said success required operationalizing AI across distributed environments and ensuring trusted data could support faster decisions and measurable business outcomes wherever work happened.

The research centered on manufacturing findings related to data readiness, including persistent gaps in data access, governance, and infrastructure performance. Morgan Bowling, Director, Global Industry AI Solutions - Industrial and Manufacturing, at Cloudera, said, “AI is creating new opportunities for manufacturers to optimize operations, improve quality, and build more resilient supply chains,” and added, “Realizing those opportunities requires more than access to data. It requires confidence in the quality, governance, and availability of that data across the business. Manufacturers that invest in data readiness today will be in a stronger position to scale AI initiatives tomorrow.”

The report discussed how manufacturing organizations could scale trusted AI across hybrid environments.
