The Apache Software Foundation launches ASF Initiatives, supported by Alpha-Omega
Alpha-Omega provides seed-funding for first effort to help encourage broad participation across open source ecosystem.
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) announced the launch of a fundraising program called ASF Initiatives. This initiative aims to provide additional financial support for Foundation governance operations, open source projects, and project communities, with the goal of meeting the increasing global demand for ASF software. Alpha-Omega has participated by seed-funding the first endeavor under this program, known as the Tooling Initiative.
The Tooling Initiative focuses on enhancing ASF project communities by streamlining development processes, automating repeated tasks, and fostering collaboration. Unlike products created by ASF Infrastructure, the tools under the Tooling Initiative are developed independently. Plans for additional initiatives include enhancing security capabilities, aligning with the EU's Cyber Resilience Act and US’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommendations.
Ruth Suehle, President of the Apache Software Foundation, stated, “As demands on open source software continue to grow, particularly in areas of security and infrastructure support, the ASF is expanding its capabilities to meet these challenges head-on. The ASF Initiatives program allows organizations to directly support specific strategic priorities that will benefit the entire ASF open source ecosystem.”
The ASF's Tooling Initiative requires a total budget increase of $500,000 to ensure continued support for high standards in software development and community initiatives. With initial backing from Alpha-Omega, the ASF is optimistic about rallying more open source stakeholders to fortify the Apache software projects widely utilized today.
Michael Winser, Co-Founder of the Alpha-Omega Project, mentioned, “We have a mission to catalyze sustainable security improvements in open source software. A key part of our strategy is to work within major ecosystems. The ASF’s ability to create common tooling infrastructure and to lead and inspire cultural changes across hundreds of projects is compelling. It’s hard to imagine a more leveraged investment. We are thrilled to help start this effort and look forward to other collaborators joining in.”
Sponsors of the ASF Tooling Initiative can enjoy the benefits of ASF Targeted Sponsors at their respective levels. Further details on sponsoring can be requested through email.
