Apache Software Foundation launches fundraising program for open source projects
Alpha-Omega provides seed-funding for first effort to help encourage broad participation across open source ecosystem.
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has announced the launch of ASF Initiatives, a new fundraising program designed to bolster support for its open source software projects. The initiative aims to address the increasing global demand for ASF software by enhancing governance operations and funding within project communities. Alpha-Omega has provided seed funding for the first endeavor under this program, named the Tooling Initiative.
This Tooling Initiative will assist project communities in streamlining their development processes, handling repetitive tasks, managing technical debt, and improving collaboration. The products developed within this initiative will be distinct from those created by ASF Infrastructure. Future initiatives are also planned, including enhancements to security that align with the EU's Cyber Resilience Act and US cybersecurity recommendations.
“As demands on open source software continue to grow, particularly in areas of security and infrastructure support, the ASF is expanding its capabilities to address these challenges,” stated Ruth Suehle, President of the ASF. “The ASF Initiatives program allows organizations to support specific strategic priorities that benefit the broader ASF open source ecosystem.”
The Tooling Initiative necessitates an increase of $500,000 to the ASF's annual budget, allowing for sustained commitment to high standards in software development and community backing. With the initial funding from Alpha-Omega, ASF anticipates attracting more open source stakeholders to strengthen Apache software projects.
Michael Winser, Co-Founder of the Alpha-Omega Project, noted, “A key part of our strategy is to work within major ecosystems. The ASF’s ability to create common tooling infrastructure and lead cultural changes across projects is compelling. It’s hard to imagine a more leveraged investment. We are pleased to help initiate this effort.”
Sponsors of the Tooling Initiative will receive benefits similar to those provided to ASF Targeted Sponsors. For more information on sponsorship opportunities, contact [email protected].
