RS now offers Schneider Electric TeSys Tera motor management

Summary

RS now offers Schneider Electric’s new TeSys Tera intelligent motor management system, a product described as a way to cut energy costs, reduce the effect of skilled labor shortages, and prevent unexpected downtime.

Unexpected motor failures and rising power costs pose operational challenges for industrial operators, particularly those running older facilities. The figures cited include average downtime costs of $260,000 per hour, electric motor systems accounting for 36–86% of electricity consumed in industrial operations, and more than half of U.S. industrial plants being 30–60 years old.

The system replaces hardwired electromechanical starters with connected, intelligent control nodes. It fits into standalone control cabinets and intelligent motor control center (iMCC) panel buckets, adding digital intelligence to legacy pumps, fans, and motor drives. It is designed for AC induction motors up to 810A.

Its monitoring covers voltage, current, power factor, and thermal capacity, along with protection against ground faults, phase loss, and stalled or locked rotors. Its predictive pre-trip alarming uses intelligent algorithms to detect operational anomalies days or weeks before failures occur. The system also restores equipment operation after power interruptions and trims nonessential motor usage during peak demand.

Connectivity spans EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP and Modbus Serial, PROFIBUS, and PROFINET, with free Schneider Electric SoMove software supporting open PLC integration. The system is described as reducing unplanned downtime by 30–50% and cutting power consumption by up to 20% in aging industrial plants. It is ideal for new continuous process facilities, iMCC retrofits, and heavy-duty applications in oil and gas, mining, chemical, pharmaceutical, water and wastewater, packaging, and discrete manufacturing.

“Conventional motor control setups act as simple switches that offer virtually no visibility into what’s occurring inside the motor during operation,” said George Nellikunnel, Offer Manager at Schneider Electric. “TeSys Tera functions as a smart translation layer between physical equipment and digital software ecosystems. It turns raw electrical currents into actionable edge diagnostics that empower overburdened maintenance teams to verify conditions remotely, streamline technician dispatch, and eliminate unnecessary service calls,” he said.
