According to a recent report from the Capgemini Research Institute, a majority of sports fans are now utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI (GenAI) to obtain personalized sports content, surpassing traditional search engines in popularity.
Fan Engagement with AI
The report indicates that 67% of sports fans prefer consolidating all sports data in a single platform. Nearly 70% are interested in obtaining statistics related to teams and players prior to matches and during breaks, facilitating enhanced engagement with digital insights.
Concerns Over Technology and Authenticity
Fan concerns regarding the integration of technology in sports are apparent, with almost 60% expressing worries that it may detract from the excitement of live games. The report points out that while AI tools are becoming primary sources for content, authentic in-person experiences remain valued by fans.
Desire for Personalization
The research highlights a significant demand for personalized interaction, noting that 54% of fans rely on AI as their main information source, with 64% wishing for tailored updates. Many fans show interest in interactive AI experiences, with 27% open to paying for features that allow virtual competition against renowned athletes.
Investments in Technology
Stadium operators are reportedly investing in applications and smart technologies to enhance fan experiences, with over half of attendees recognizing improvements in ticketing and real-time applications. This response seeks to meet the rising expectations for technology integration in the sports viewing experience.
Challenges and Methodology
The report also identifies challenges such as data privacy issues concerning AI in sports, with younger fans more likely to consent to data collection compared to older demographics. The Capgemini Research Institute conducted the survey among 12,017 sports fans across 11 countries in March and April 2025.
