Summary
Fortinet has added a cloud-delivered offering that brings AI-specific inspection and guardrails to FortiGate firewalls. The FortiGuard Inline AI Security Service is designed to give organizations greater visibility into AI activity and to help them stop AI threats and data exposure through Fortinet solutions they already use.
Fortinet's broad FortiGate deployment gives organizations an existing route to adopting AI security without setting up separate infrastructure. Customers can turn on the service without deploying and managing additional AI security systems, which extends advanced AI security to a wider set of organizations. Those with more advanced security, privacy, and sovereignty requirements can instead run FortiAIGate directly in their own environment to control how and where AI traffic and data are processed.
FortiAIGate-based guardrails examine prompts and data in real time and apply security, compliance, and data protection policies to interactions involving agents, large language models (LLMs), and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools. The service extends existing capabilities for discovering shadow AI use and applying data loss prevention (DLP) policies to AI traffic by inspecting the content of AI interactions and masking sensitive data, without adding new infrastructure to deploy and manage.
Organizations can apply multilayered guardrails to prompts, responses, MCP tool calls, API activity, and agent actions, and can set budgets and rate limits by organization, workspace, project, or user. Dedicated workspaces and more than 50 predefined policies are also available, and FortiAIGate can be self-hosted on-premises or in a customer's cloud on Kubernetes with NVIDIA GPUs. Technology from the recent acquisition of Virtue AI supports these capabilities.
“Organizations need AI security that can scale with how quickly AI is being adopted across the enterprise,” said Michael Xie, Founder, President, and Chief Technology Officer at Fortinet. “By extending advanced AI inspection and guardrails through FortiGate, we are making AI security available through the infrastructure customers already use.”
“FortiAIGate takes an elegant approach to a complex problem,” said Will Townsend, Chief Analyst at LoneStar Advisory & Research. “Rather than asking customers to manage separate tools for AI security, governance, cost, and agent visibility, Fortinet is bringing these capabilities together in a single gateway.” Ongoing innovation in FortiAIGate continues to power these capabilities.
