A new report from global technology intelligence firm ABI Research examines how industrial sites are changing their approach to energy as electrification accelerates. The research points to a shift in how energy is handled, as sites move toward more deliberate operational planning.
The report says software, optimization, and coordinated energy strategies are becoming central to managing rising electricity demand at warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and airports. Growth in demand is visible for both Building EMSs and Industrial EMSs as electrification extends across site operations. Electric models already account for 72% of new lift truck shipments globally, rising to about 85% for warehouse forklifts.
Battery Energy Storage Systems are described as critical enabling infrastructure because they address several requirements at once, including peak demand management, renewable integration, backup power, demand charge reduction, and grid connection deferral. Larger sites lead adoption of advanced energy solutions, since higher automation levels, longer operating hours, and heavier equipment loads strengthen the case for BESSs, EMSs, and on-site renewables.
Suppliers are moving toward integrated offerings that span battery cells, energy storage, charging infrastructure, wireless charging, and smart energy management platforms. Tesla Energy, BYD, Sungrow, Fluence, Hitachi Energy, ENRX, Wiferion, and Kempower are among the companies active in this ecosystem.
The findings come from the report Managing Industrial Electrification: Energy Infrastructure, Storage, and Optimization Strategies, part of ABI Research’s Smart Energy research service, which includes research, data, and ABI Insights. “Industrial electrification is no longer just about adding chargers, storage, or on-site generation, it is increasingly about orchestrating those assets intelligently,” said Ryan Wiggin, Research Director at ABI Research.
“Grid constraints, volatile electricity pricing, and the operational demands of electrified fleets mean industrial sites will increasingly resemble managed energy ecosystems,” said Wiggin. Looking ahead, the report projects that energy management system investment will double by 2035.
