ABI Research said its analysis found the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) versus Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) branding debate distracted manufacturers from what the firm described as the market shift toward modular, interoperable, data-centric operations platforms.
The firm said it expects the MES market to grow from US$22 billion in 2026 to US$43 billion by 2036 and forecasted a 7.6% compound annual growth rate between 2025 and 2036. ABI Research also said SaaS deployments drive most new revenue and that discrete manufacturers showed a higher near-term intent to invest in and upgrade MES software.
ABI Research said vendors continued to use a mix of MES, MOM, and adjacent labels, but the firm found limited consistency in how those terms mapped to functionality or customer value. In its view, the market’s differentiation centered on modular composability and stronger integration across IT and OT environments.
In its “Beyond MES: The State of Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) and MOM-Like Solutions” report, ABI Research described next-phase MES growth as centering on machine-derived data, real-time contextualization, API-based integration, and AI-supported decision-making. “The Manufacturing Execution System (MES) Versus Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) Branding Debate is Not Practical and Must End,” said Colin McMahon, senior analyst at ABI Research. “Manufacturers care less about competing acronyms than whether a platform can deliver interoperability, contextualized data, and practical support for digital-first, AI-enabled operations.”
