WISeKey and Swiss Armed Forces Enhance Satellite Security
WISeKey International Holding Ltd and the Swiss Armed Forces have progressed their collaboration aimed at enhancing satellite security. This partnership, initiated in 2022, focuses on developing Switzerland’s sovereign space capabilities through a Secure Authentication Framework (SAF) that integrates secure Internet of Things (IoT) satellites with post-quantum cryptographic technologies.
Recent reports highlighted vulnerabilities in the global Satellite Communications (Satcom) ecosystem, revealing how unencrypted signals could be easily intercepted. In response, WISeKey’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) division, alongside the Swiss Armed Forces, is working to ensure secure communications for military operations while minimizing reliance on foreign satellite technologies.
Since their agreement, the organizations have conducted joint Research and Development (R&D) on secure communications systems, including LEO Constellation (Low Earth Orbit) IoT applications. The collaboration incorporates SEALSQ’s post-quantum semiconductors and WISeKey’s encryption solutions, addressing identified vulnerabilities and supporting the creation of a secure orbital network.
Ludovic Monnerat, the new commander of the Swiss Armed Forces' Space Command, emphasized the importance of building strategic partnerships to enhance capabilities that meet military needs. Carlos Moreira, CEO of WISeKey, supported this view, stating that the partnership establishes Switzerland as a key player in secure satellite technologies.
