Varonis Systems, Inc. launched a new Data Lifecycle Management (DLM) capability intended to locate and remove redundant, obsolete, and trivial (ROT) data across an organization’s data estate. The update targets conditions that can increase storage consumption and add risk associated with data that remains available after it should not.
The company positioned ROT reduction as a way to lower storage bills and reduce exposure created by unnecessary data. It also cited potential downstream effects, including noise in AI outputs and a wider attack surface, along with the possibility of audit findings and fines tied to regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA.
Varonis said the capability uses the Varonis Data Security Platform to understand which data is sensitive, who can access it, and how it is being used, to provide context for removal. The company described a single dashboard that displays total ROT volume and details such as duplicate clusters, stale files and folders, and data outside its retention window.
In addition, Varonis said DLM shows duplicate groups with context, identifies ROT data beyond text-based documents by surfacing data in media files, installers, DLLs, and archives, and maps classification categories to legal retention windows. The company also stated DLM quarantines data that violates policies and that every action is reversible, with companies selecting which copy to keep before any change occurs. “Every enterprise is sitting on data that’s costing them money and adding risk, and AI will only multiply that risk and make it harder to manage at scale,” said David Bass, Executive VP of Engineering and CTO at Varonis. “Varonis does that work automatically, behind the scenes.
