Kyndryl released its first global Modernization Report, based on input from 2,000 business and technology leaders, to examine how AI affects modernization priorities and operational planning. The report places business orchestration alongside technology modernization as organizations expand investments across legacy and modern platforms.
The findings describe modernization as a business-wide priority, with decision-making involving multiple stakeholder groups that can include CIOs, CTOs, boards of directors, and finance and compliance teams. Respondents also reported that nearly half were behind schedule on modernization goals, while sovereignty considerations and governance needs influenced modernization strategies.
According to the report, organizations are expanding technology use as AI raises expectations for technology delivery, rather than consolidating environments. It also reported that need to adopt AI now outranked priorities to reduce spending, replace legacy systems, or address a shrinking pool of legacy systems expertise, and that AI affected mainframe and edge computing use, SaaS and private cloud expansion, and upgrades to networks and application portfolios.
The study described how agentic AI, which can plan and execute tasks, entered production for modernization in 10% of organizations, applied to dependency mapping, code conversion, and documentation generation. Early adopters reported that 67% were ahead of or on track with modernization goals, compared with 51% for other organizations. “AI is creating new possibilities and raising expectations for the business outcomes technology should deliver,” Kyndryl Chairman and CEO Martin Schroeter said.
