Iridium Communications awarded 5-year contract for satellite system infrastructure upgrades
Iridium Communications Inc. has secured an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract spanning five years with the U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command Commercial Space Office, potentially valued at $85.8 million. The contract focuses on advancing the capabilities of satellite service infrastructure critical to secure communications.
This agreement addresses technological updates, maintenance cycles, and security improvements for key facilities, including the Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services Service Center, the Technical Support Center, and the Defense Ground Station. These enhancements contribute to sustaining operational capacity and security requirements for satellite communication systems used in challenging conditions.
The contract is a continuation of Iridium's prior agreement from 2019, the Gateway Evolution Contract, emphasizing ongoing upgrades to system infrastructure. The work leverages the Iridium network, which consists of a LEO Constellation (Low Earth Orbit) satellite constellation providing voice and data communications with global coverage, even in adverse weather.
Iridium's role includes maintaining and upgrading services under this contract as part of a suite of agreements with the Space Force, alongside contracts for airtime provision and capabilities and security sustainment services. These collectively ensure the continuity and reliability of mission-critical communications for defense-related use.
Scott Scheimreif, executive vice president at Iridium, said, “Through this contract, Iridium and the U.S. Space Force will continue to innovate and deliver resilient, secure and highly reliable mission-critical communications. Our solutions with the Department of Defense are designed to serve every layer of the warfighter's P.A.C.E. (Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency) plan. We look forward to supporting the U.S. and our allies through new technology introductions and ongoing collaboration.”
Iridium also provides satellite operations and network management expertise to establish the ground Operations and Integration segment for the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture's first tranche, as noted in related contracts awarded in 2024.
