Iridium and Vodafone IoT integrate NTN Direct for NB-IoT connectivity
Iridium Communications Intelligent Network Controller (INC). announced a partnership with Vodafone Internet of Things (IoT) to integrate the Iridium Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) Direct service, aimed at enhancing Narrowband IoT (Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT)) coverage for customers operating in remote locations.
The collaboration will enable Vodafone IoT to utilize Iridium's NTN Direct service, adhering to 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards for Narrowband Internet of things (NB-IoT) and direct-to-device connectivity. This integration supports a range of sectors that require reliable connectivity, such as autonomous windfarms, oil pipelines, and emergency services.
The planned commercial launch for the Iridium NTN Direct service is set for 2026. The initiative seeks to facilitate data messaging, tracking, and real-time monitoring for IoT devices while extending connectivity capabilities for clients of Vodafone IoT.
Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium, stated, “Iridium NTN Direct stands out among NTN and NB-IoT services by offering MNOs – like Vodafone IoT – an unmatched combination of truly global coverage, reliability, and capability.”
Vodafone IoT's CEO, Erik Brenneis, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing its potential to enhance global IoT connectivity significantly. The integration aims to open new opportunities for devices to connect reliably in previously inaccessible areas.
Iridium's network, known for its robust safety of life services, operates on globally coordinated L-band spectrum, designed for reliable performance in challenging environments. Following successful integration and testing, Iridium and Vodafone IoT plan to offer their full range of services to customers worldwide.
