Huawei AI initiative shows success in dolphin protection

Liu Yifan announced notable progress in an AI-driven solution aimed at the conservation of Chinese white dolphins in Xiamen Bay. Launched under Huawei's TECH4ALL initiative, the project identified 13 dolphins from 2,820 images and videos.

The initiative achieved an individual identification accuracy rate exceeding 90% and an 85% recognition rate for complex behaviors. Additionally, data labeling efficiency improved by 400%, and law enforcement's response time to violations increased by 65%.

According to Cui Yangyang, Director of the TECH4ALL Program Office for Huawei, Artificial Intelligence (AI) data-driven insights assist conservation efforts in addressing threats to the dolphins. Chinese white dolphins are recognized as a vulnerable species, with their population facing risks from shipping, fishing, and habitat loss.

The project is a collaboration with the Third Institute of Oceanography and China Mobile, utilizing a recognition system that differentiates dolphins by their dorsal fin markings. Wang Xianyan from the Third Institute emphasized the efficiency AI brings to conservation measures.

The AI solution performs multiple functions, including image preprocessing, identification, data classification, and cloud display. It maintains individual records for each dolphin, aiding in the overall assessment of the population's health and behavior.

With critical years ahead for the dolphin population, researchers noted the species' role in oceanic ecosystems and carbon cycles. The deployment of a 5G-A network across 330 square kilometers facilitates continuous monitoring of key areas.

The integration of 5G-A technology enhances real-time tracking of vessels, with AI-powered alerts for boundary violations helping to protect the dolphins. To date, 12 vessels have been investigated for their potential threats to the species.

The ongoing research and application of AI contribute to understanding the dolphin population's dynamics, supporting their conservation and survival efforts.
