Ericsson to power the majority of VodafoneThree's next-generation UK network in SEK 12.5 billion partnership
Ericsson and VodafoneThree entered an eight-year partnership valued at SEK 12.5 billion (approximately GBP 1 billion) to enhance VodafoneThree's mobile network. This collaboration focuses on deploying Ericsson's 5G Standalone (SA) technology across the UK, specifically targeting the four capital cities: London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast.
Under this agreement, Ericsson secured the status of sole core network vendor for VodafoneThree, which serves nearly 29 million customers. The integration of Ericsson's Radio System products includes 5G SA hardware, software, and solutions aimed at enhancing mobile broadband services and enabling digitalization efforts within various sectors. The partnership emphasizes the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation as part of its strategy.
Börje Ekholm, President and CEO of Ericsson, highlighted the importance of high-performing programmable networks in achieving objectives in the digital economy. Max Taylor, CEO of VodafoneThree, noted the partnership's role in building a secure and resilient network, supporting the UK's long-term digital infrastructure goals.
Ericsson's 5G network will extend beyond the capitals, covering major cities such as Leeds, Sheffield, and Bristol. The rollout plans project achieving 99.95% population coverage with 5G SA technology across the UK by 2034.
