Crusoe and ON.energy to Deploy 5 GW of AI UPS™ Across Campuses
Crusoe and ON.energy entered a partnership to deploy 5 gigawatts of ON.energy’s AI UPS™ technology across multiple hyperscale campuses. The effort centers on power reliability for AI data center operations while addressing grid stability during AI workload changes.
AI training can cause synchronized bursts of GPU activity that create rapid fluctuations in power demand, according to the partnership materials. The release stated that, if unmanaged, those fluctuations could propagate to the point of interconnection and increase demands on grid equipment.
ON.energy’s AI UPS™ was described as a patented, medium-voltage uninterruptible power system that sits inline between power sources and AI data centers. The system is described as decoupling the facility from the grid so it rides through voltage faults without disconnecting, while preventing internal GPU load swings from affecting the grid.
The AI UPS™ was validated against ERCOT’s Large Load Interconnection requirements, meeting grid stability and voltage ride-through standards proposed for responsible large-load interconnection in Texas, including compliance with NOGRR 282 and ERCOT’s Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) protocols. The release also said the technology stores enough energy to power an entire campus for extended durations and commissioning would begin in 2026 and extend into 2027.
