CompTIA survey finds IT workers want more career support

CompTIA’s IT Career Insights 2026 study finds that many information technology professionals are satisfied in their jobs yet want more help advancing their careers. The findings come as artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes workplace skill requirements.
Overall job satisfaction stands at 76%, but fewer than half of respondents, 47%, are satisfied with advancement opportunities. Career concerns are common, with 87% reporting at least one. Limited career growth and uncertainty about next steps rank highest among workers generally, though at somewhat lower rates for IT professionals.
On AI, 55% say it improves their efficiency and 34% say it is changing job skill requirements. Another 57% rank AI skills among their top development priorities, and 88% intend to prioritize at least one AI-related skill.
92% say additional resources would help them reach their career goals. Among IT professionals at small and mid-size businesses, 33% say their employer does not provide ongoing learning support or that they are unsure what resources exist, compared with 20% at the largest firms. Among certification holders, 84% cite career or professional gains, yet 34% say their employer covers certification costs, and 44% pay those expenses themselves.
The study surveyed 3,631 CompTIA certification alumni and other IT professionals in 12 countries. Amy Carrado, senior director of workforce research at CompTIA, said, “IT professionals are taking steps to keep their skills current, particularly as AI changes workplace skill requirements.”
Carrado also said, “They are also looking for more opportunities to advance and stronger support for developing new skills.” Elsewhere, she said, “Employees are investing in their own development through certifications, training and AI skills. Employers that match that commitment can strengthen workforce readiness while supporting career growth.” Within two years, 68% plan to strengthen their skills or pursue a higher-level role.
