CompTIA has said it plans to develop a certification that defines and validates the skills needed to manage artificial intelligence agents. The work comes as AI agents move into enterprise operations, while the skills required to manage them responsibly remain undefined.
Survey data cited by the company points to fast adoption alongside limited governance maturity. KPMG's first-quarter 2026 AI Quarterly Pulse Survey found that 54% of organizations are actively deploying AI agents. Deloitte found that 21% of surveyed companies have a mature governance model for autonomous agents. The shift is associated with productivity gains, but it also introduces new security, governance and operational risks.
CompTIA AgentOps+ is intended as a vendor-neutral standard for professionals who deploy, secure, monitor and govern AI agents, spanning AI, cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure and IT operations. Planned skills include deploying and integrating agents, securing agent identities, permissions and data access, monitoring performance and operational health, responding to agent-related risks and incidents, and supporting governance, accountability and human oversight.
The credential is being designed around durable operational principles rather than the products of any single technology provider, for professionals in DevOps, cloud operations, platform engineering, systems administration and cybersecurity. The certification is described as offering employers a way to upskill staff and validate AI operations skills. Educational institutions and training providers can prepare learners for emerging AI operations roles.
“The focus has been on what AI agents can do, but the more urgent question is who will secure, govern and be accountable for them,” said Carl Bowman, senior vice president, exam services, CompTIA. “As agents gain access to enterprise data and workflows, organizations need professionals who can manage them securely and responsibly. CompTIA intends to help define that standard.”
CompTIA AgentOps+ and a related suite of learning products are planned for release in Q2 2027.
