China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited has completed network testing and validation of a U6GHz network at its Mong Kok flagship store in Hong Kong. The work is intended to strengthen network capabilities and lay groundwork for Hong Kong's future 6G development.
Upper 6GHz spectrum offers continuous wide bandwidth and serves as a crucial resource for 5G-A and later 6G evolution. Hong Kong completed its 6/7GHz spectrum auction on 29 November 2024, becoming the first region worldwide to auction this band for public mobile services. China Mobile Hong Kong secured 100MHz of continuous spectrum in the auction. Since then, the company has made early deployments, validated network capabilities, and adapted terminals to gain experience for future 6G commercialization.
The U6GHz spectrum can be combined with existing frequency bands, and some combinations reach download speeds of 3Gbps. The additional spectrum supports more simultaneous connections, improves service in highly congested areas, and accommodates high-definition video and large-capacity data transmission.
Demand for data transmission from smart glasses and AI robots is rising as artificial intelligence spreads into production and daily life. China Mobile Hong Kong plans to pair U6GHz with intelligent computing services, improve connections between terminals and intelligent computing platforms, and examine AI image analysis, immersive interactions, and industrial applications.
The company intends to align its work with Mainland China's 15th Five-Year Plan and Hong Kong's first Five-Year Plan, with a focus on AI+, computing infrastructure, and new industrialisation. Working with partners, it will research, develop, and test U6GHz products, and expand hotspot coverage according to demand.
China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of China Mobile Limited and was established in January 1997. It was the first mobile network operator to launch PCS services in Hong Kong. The company plans to continue providing digital infrastructure to Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
