Bechtel and the University of South Carolina’s Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing announced a partnership that established the Bechtel Nuclear Energy Workforce Development Fund. The initiative addresses workforce development needs associated with nuclear education, research, and training activities in South Carolina.
The fund includes programs intended to connect students and trainees with nuclear-sector careers and expand collaboration among Bechtel, the university, technical colleges, building-trades partners, and other workforce leaders across the state. The partnership also supported the Molinaroli College’s proposed Nuclear Innovation Center within its emerging Engineering District.
Under the fund, Bechtel plans to support experiential learning and workforce development programs spanning engineering and project management to skilled trade professions for building, operating, and maintaining nuclear energy infrastructure. The organizations said the work draws on Bechtel’s 70 years of nuclear experience to help develop curriculum and training materials for skilled trades careers in nuclear construction.
Bechtel and USC also described ongoing coordination toward the Nuclear Innovation Center, designed to bring together education, research, industry, and workforce-development partners. “South Carolina has the talent, experience, and supporting infrastructure to play an important role in America’s nuclear future,” said Dena Volovar, president of Bechtel’s Nuclear, Security & Environmental business. “The future of nuclear energy in South Carolina depends on a workforce ecosystem that prepares people for the full range of careers this industry will require,” said Hossein Haj-Hariri, dean of the Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing.
The partnership included a memorandum of understanding signed in May between Bechtel and North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) to modernize nuclear construction apprenticeships by identifying specialized craft skills, updating curricula with union training centers, and expanding recruitment for careers building large reactors and small modular reactors.
