ISC2 launched its Academic Advisory Council to bring cybersecurity educators, academic leaders, and industry practitioners together on workforce readiness and program effectiveness. The initiative focused on preparing students for cybersecurity roles that involve securing, governing, and responsibly using artificial intelligence in cyber environments.
ISC2 cited demand for job-ready skills as cybersecurity practices expand to include artificial intelligence. It referenced a CyberBay survey stating 74.5% of respondents believed existing undergraduate cybersecurity curriculum lacked important elements. ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study findings identified artificial intelligence as a frequently cited skills need, with 41% of respondents, followed by cloud security at 36%.
The Council planned a structured forum to connect classroom learning with workforce expectations. ISC2 said the Council would be guided by educators and practitioners who understand institutional challenges in delivering sustainable, high-quality cybersecurity education programs. Its work drew on workforce skills needs, including evolving threats such as AI-driven social engineering, ransomware, and rapidly scaled software vulnerabilities.
ISC2 said it would serve as convener and facilitator, using workforce research, certification expertise, and its global professional community to support the initiative. Casey Marks, Chief Operating Officer, said, “Preparing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals requires more than strong academic programs; it requires sustained alignment between what is taught, what employers need and what the profession demands,” adding, “The Academic Advisory Council gives academia and industry a structured and collaborative forum to focus on workforce readiness, program effectiveness and operational excellence.” The Council focus areas included strengthening workforce readiness as AI became more prevalent, supporting operational excellence, advancing program effectiveness, and creating opportunities to share practices.
