Akamai Technologies enhances API Security offerings to improve threat management

Akamai Technologies, a cybersecurity and cloud computing firm, announced enhancements to its Application Programming Interface (API) Security offerings. These updates aim to assist clients in mitigating evolving threats to APIs while receiving accolades from industry awards and increasing customer adoption.

As organizations depend on APIs to power mobile applications and online banking, these interfaces have become prime targets for cyberattacks. To counter these threats, companies strive to secure their APIs without hindering performance.

The latest enhancements address visibility issues throughout the API development and production lifecycle. Key updates include the first managed service for API security that provides real-time monitoring, threat detection, and guidance. Additionally, a new integration allows teams to scan API specifications prior to launch, and a Compliance Dashboard offers a centralized overview of security and privacy standard compliance.

Akamai customers have noted the benefits of these API Security updates. A chief technology officer from an insurance firm said, “Akamai API Security gives us a clear view of what data is being used and how.” Meanwhile, a chief Information Security (infosec) officer from a software company acknowledged the ease of deployment and significant improvements in data security assessments. An executive from a healthcare organization stated, “The tool is robust and responsive, providing visibility at the API level.”

Akamai’s recognition in the cybersecurity landscape recently includes awards from Cyber Defense Magazine and the 2025 Cloud web app and API protection (WAAP) CyberRisk Validation Report, highlighting its effectiveness in API protection. Senior Vice President Rupesh Chokshi mentioned, “Companies are realizing that APIs are a prime target for attackers and securing them is essential to staying resilient.”
