Trust and human-AI collaboration set to define the next era of agentic AI, unlocking $450 billion opportunity by 2028

Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) is projected to generate up to $450 billion in economic value by 2028. However, despite potential revenue gains and cost savings, only 2% of organizations have fully scaled deployment, and trust in AI agents has declined. Privacy and ethical concerns contributed to a drop in confidence, from 43% to 27% in the past year. Most executives prioritize human oversight, with 90% considering it to be beneficial or cost-neutral.

According to the Capgemini Research Institute’s report, “Rise of agentic AI: How trust is the key to human-AI collaboration,” trust and human involvement are essential for realizing the benefits of AI agents. Organizations are finding that AI agents achieve optimal results when humans assist in their operations. While 93% of leaders believe that scaling AI will enhance competitiveness, almost half lack a defined implementation strategy.

As organizations move from exploration to adoption, they report increased trust in AI agents, with confidence rising from 37% to 47% in those at the implementation stage. This demonstrates a need for transparency and clarity in AI decision-making processes amidst growing concerns over performance and safety.

The report outlines that 60% of organizations expect to form human-agent teams within the next year, marking a paradigm where AI agents assist, rather than replace, human roles. A majority anticipate necessary organizational restructuring to facilitate this integration, with expectations of increased engagement, creativity, and employee satisfaction.

Despite the potential economic impact, many organizations face challenges related to AI readiness, with 80% lacking mature infrastructure. Ethical issues persist, emphasizing the need for strategic approaches to AI deployment. The report argues for a shift towards comprehensive planning and the establishment of human-AI trust as essential to maximizing the financial benefits of agentic AI.
