Summary
Ribbon Communications Inc. has introduced Ribbon Call Trust Deepfake Detection, a network-based solution that targets calls containing AI-generated synthetic audio. The product responds to rising threats in which fabricated voices are used during calls.
Voice impersonation has become easier with AI, allowing bad actors to produce convincing imitations of colleagues, customers, public figures, and family members. As a result, a call that appears to come from a known contact and sounds authentic may not be. Voice calls also unfold in real time, which leaves little opportunity to pause and reflect before responding, unlike suspicious emails or messages.
The threat has expanded as agentic AI has risen, and the trend is expected to continue. CrowdStrike reported that vishing intrusions increased 2x in the first half of 2026 compared with the second half of 2025. Gartner found that 41% of chief information security officers reported at least one social engineering incident involving a deepfake during an employee audio call in the previous 12 months, and 36% reported one during a video call.
The solution operates within the network and analyzes call streams through Ribbon Session Border Controllers (SBCs). It applies patent-pending synthetic audio detection algorithms to identify artificial voice content, including individual synthetic segments inserted into an otherwise legitimate call. The design accounts for audio that has passed through multiple codecs or networks.
Because the capability sits at the network level, it covers all endpoints without requiring users to install an application or use a screen-based device. Detection data can be coordinated with third-party security systems to support a broader threat response. It builds on existing SBC capabilities and is designed to operate at scale in enterprise or service provider networks. Customer lab trials are expected to begin in 1Q 2027.
“AI has dramatically lowered the barrier to human impersonation. What once required sophisticated technology and extensive recordings can now be accomplished with a relatively small voice sample,” said Sam Bucci, COO and EVP at Ribbon. The forward-looking statements in the release involve risks and uncertainties, and the company disclaims any obligation to update them.
