Shopify is a multi-tenant, cloud-based commerce platform (e-commerce and POS) used by businesses to run online stores, retail point-of-sale, and omnichannel commerce from a unified environment. Enterprise and institutional users employ Shopify to handle storefront presentation, catalog management, secure checkout, payments, and post-purchase workflows without operating their own commerce infrastructure stack.

The platform provides hosted online storefronts that support responsive themes, templating, and customization through Liquid (templating language) plus HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Merchants can manage products, variants, pricing, discounts, and collections through an administrative console and APIs. Shopify’s checkout stack supports card payments, digital wallets, and alternative payment methods, along with tax, shipping rate, and duty calculations, depending on configuration and region.

For payments (payments/fintech), Shopify offers integrated payment processing that connects directly to the store’s checkout, including support for multiple currencies and localized payment methods in supported markets. Settlement, payouts, chargeback handling, and basic risk controls are managed within the same administrative environment. Larger organizations can integrate external payment gateways when required by existing financial, risk, or regional policies.

In omnichannel commerce operations (order management/inventory), Shopify enables selling across web storefronts, mobile, social channels, and external marketplaces. Orders from these channels can be centralized into a single operational view, with inventory tracked across locations and, where configured, retail stores using Shopify’s point-of-sale capabilities (retail POS). This supports workflows such as ship-from-store, buy-online-pickup-in-store, and basic fulfillment routing, according to how the merchant configures locations and apps.

Shopify exposes Representational State Transfer (REST) and GraphQL APIs (developer platform) for storefront data, orders, customers, inventory, and fulfillment, allowing integration with ERP, CRM, marketing automation, logistics, and data platforms. A structured app framework and app store support extensions ranging from marketing and personalization to shipping, tax, and compliance solutions. Themes and apps can be developed by in-house teams or external partners, enabling enterprise users to align Shopify with existing technology stacks.

From a technical architecture perspective, Shopify abstracts hosting, scaling, and availability of the commerce layer through its Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. Merchants do not manage underlying servers, databases, or Content Delivery Network (CDN) configuration; instead, they configure storefront behavior, business rules, and integrations through admin interfaces, APIs, and configuration files. This positions Shopify in marketplace taxonomies under e-commerce platforms, retail POS, payments/fintech, and developer ecosystems for commerce-related integrations.
