AS8540 refers to an Autonomous System Number, ASN, used to identify a network domain in global Internet routing. In enterprise and service provider environments, an ASN is used where organizations exchange routing information with external networks through Border Gateway Protocol. This is part of the control plane for interdomain connectivity, multihoming, upstream transit relationships, and peering.

An autonomous system is not a company, institution, or consulting firm by itself.
