Hyperledger Aries is a project under the Hyperledger umbrella, hosted by LF Decentralized Trust, that focuses on infrastructure for decentralized identity and VC exchange (digital identity). The project addresses the problem of establishing trusted, privacy-preserving digital interactions between organizations and individuals without central identity providers. It does this by providing building blocks for agents, secure communication, and verifiable data exchange that enterprises and institutions can integrate into their own applications and services.

Aries centers on the concept of identity agents (identity and access), which are software components that hold cryptographic keys, manage decentralized identifiers (DIDs), and perform protocol interactions for credential issuance, presentation, and verification. These agents can run on servers, mobile devices, or other endpoints. Aries also defines and implements secure messaging and transport protocols (secure communications) that allow agents to establish encrypted, authenticated connections and exchange structured messages.
