Opera integrates Google's AI models into its browser lineup

Opera has introduced advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) functionalities across its Opera One, Opera GX, and Opera Neon browsers, extending access to its AI-powered features for more than 80 million users. The integration deploys Google's latest Gemini models within the browsers to enhance user interaction capabilities.

The incorporation of AI within these browsers allows for context-aware assistance during web navigation, including the ability to summarize content, compare multiple tabs, and analyze various file types such as images and videos. This integration supports voice commands and responses, contributing to an interactive browsing environment with user-controlled privacy settings regarding shared data.

Opera rebuilt its AI engine architecture to improve response times by approximately 20%, adopting an agent-based model originally developed for Opera Neon. The enhanced design facilitates more efficient processing and communication with web content, contributing to a more seamless browsing experience.

The company reported a 17 percent annual growth in query revenue, reflecting increased monetization associated with user engagement beyond traditional search activities, including those involving AI tools. This growth is linked to the capabilities provided through Opera's ongoing collaboration with Google, which contributes to search and AI services embedded within the browsers.

“AI is reshaping how people interact with the web, and the browser is the natural entry point for those experiences,” said Power Efficiency Ratio (PER) Wetterdal, EVP Commercial at Opera. PER Gustafsson, Managing Director Nordics at Google, said, “Our long-standing partnership with Opera is a testament to our shared vision for an innovative ecosystem. By integrating the latest Gemini models, Opera is not just enhancing its browsers, but setting a new standard for AI-powered user experiences. We are proud to provide the cutting-edge AI capabilities that help partners like Opera thrive and continue to shape the future of browsing for millions of users worldwide.”

The browsers leverage real-time context such as open tabs and browsing flows, which differs from Standalone (SA) AI chat interfaces, allowing for more targeted assistance and support for task completion within the browsing session. Opera emphasizes compatibility with various AI platforms alongside its native features to accommodate diverse user preferences.
