Nokia extends contract with Telefónica Germany to upgrade Radio Access Network through 2030
Nokia secured a five-year contract extension with Telefónica Germany to update and enhance the operator's nationwide Radio Access Network (RAN) through 2030. The agreement aims to support Telefónica's efforts to expand its 5G network and digital infrastructure across Germany.
The contract outlines Telefónica's focus on elevating network performance and operational efficiency as it extends 5G coverage. Nokia's solutions are expected to contribute to sustaining network reliability and to managing network operations more effectively using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.
Nokia will provide its AirScale RAN portfolio, which includes energy-efficient AirScale Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radios for the n78 spectrum, Pandion multi-band remote radio heads, and AirScale Radio small cells. The deployment also involves Nokia's Interleaved Passive Active Antenna (IPAA+) technology to streamline site design. Additionally, Nokia's advanced baseband solutions will be integrated to bolster network performance and reliability.
The agreement supports Telefónica's continued use of Nokia's MantaRay NM, an AI-enabled network management platform designed for Radio Access Networks and Cloud RAN. This platform handles operations and maintenance for both physical and virtual network elements across core, radio, and transport segments, aligning with Telefónica's objective to achieve network automation level 4 through AI-driven orchestration.
Justin Hotard, President and CEO of Nokia, said, “We’re proud to extend our partnership with Telefónica Germany as we help them strengthen their performance, efficiency, and customer experience across their 5G network. With Nokia’s anyRAN software, AirScale baseband, and autonomous network platforms, Telefónica is also positioned for long-term competitiveness as the AI Supercycle takes hold.” Matthias Sauder, Director Networks at O2 Telefónica, said, “Nokia has been a trusted partner in our journey to deliver the best network experience for our customers. This contract extension reflects our shared commitment to advancing 5G technology and creating a more connected and sustainable Germany.”
The contract includes Nokia's commitment to maintenance and network optimization services, supporting Telefónica's ongoing network upgrades and digital transformation plans through 2030.
