Internet2 NET+ Google AI Education Leadership Program Launches
The Internet2 NET+ Google Artificial Intelligence (AI) Education Leadership Program provides higher education institutions with a community-driven pathway to adopt AI responsibly. This joint initiative by Internet2 and Google aims to integrate AI tools, including Gemini and NotebookLM, into teaching, research, and administrative functions across colleges and universities.
Launched on October 22, 2025, the program emphasizes community-driven innovation rather than merely software licensing. It facilitates a collaborative environment where institutions can share knowledge and experiences, helping to navigate the complexities associated with AI implementation.
The NET+ Google AI ELP offers no-cost opportunities designed to streamline operations, enhance educational experiences, and prepare students for career readiness. Key principles include prioritizing security, transparency, and ethical AI usage. Sean O'Brien, who leads Internet2's NET+ cloud services program, noted that the program aims to help member institutions leverage AI by addressing challenges collectively.
The initial cohort of the NET+ Google AI ELP comprises 10 institutions, including renowned universities like New York University and the University of California, Berkeley, which together serve over 325,000 students. Jennifer Sparrow from New York University stated the importance of a shared strategy for using AI to advance academic goals.
The program includes resources like cohort onboarding, a dedicated community of practice, and ongoing training for faculty and staff. Access to Google experts allows institutions to shape product development based on user feedback. Such initiatives foster collaboration and highlight successful use cases for the wider education community.
Drew Sidel of Google emphasized that the program aims to make advanced AI tools accessible while ensuring responsible use. The Internet2 NET+ Google AI Education Leadership Program represents a model for affordable AI adoption and actively addresses the community's needs.
