Globalstar, Inc. has received nationwide authority from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to operate its previously announced third-generation C-3 MSS System in the United States. The order allows the system to proceed with domestic operations.
The order is the result of a relationship between Globalstar and the FCC that has continued for more than three decades. Under the authorization, C-3 satellites will be able to communicate with hundreds of millions of mobile earth terminals located in the United States.
The system was notified to the International Telecommunication Union by France under the name AST-NG-C-3. It will comprise 48 low Earth orbit satellites operating at an altitude of 1,414 kilometers, plus 6 in-orbit spares. Direct-to-device connectivity to smartphones is among the capabilities described.
Approximately 90 six-meter ground station antennas are to be installed around the world to support this next generation of global direct-to-device connectivity. The order also permits ground station antennas in Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico to communicate with the C-3 satellites.
Satellite operations will be commanded and controlled from dedicated operations control centers in Toulouse, France, and at the corporate headquarters in Covington, La. “Receiving this FCC authorization is a critical step forward for continuing to enhance the capabilities of our low Earth orbit satellite constellations,” said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, CEO of Globalstar.
“C-3 is truly a global system that will support the communications needs of a global public,” said L. Barbee Ponder, General Counsel and Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for Globalstar. Launches of the C-3 satellites are expected to begin next year.
