EE Announces 5G Standalone Coverage Plans for the UK
EE announced its goal to provide 5G Standalone (SA) coverage to 99% of the UK's population by the end of fiscal year 2030, ahead of other mobile operators’ timelines. The deployment aims to enhance mobile internet capabilities, allowing for increased capacity and better performance in densely populated areas.
The company reported that its network architecture is designed to offer up to 100 times the capacity of 4G, enabling it to manage demands from multiple devices effectively. Key initiatives include significant technological upgrades to improve network performance.
Among these advancements, EE introduced Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology, deploying the Ericsson Adaptive Incident Response (AIR) 3284 devices. Two units have been operational in Leeds, with further installations planned in various locations across the UK.
Additionally, the company has enhanced its coverage through over 1,500 outdoor small cells, with plans for continued expansion, including recent deployments in cities like Belfast and Bristol. Recent innovations, such as Advanced Radio Access Network (RAN) Coordination, allow mobile sites to share capacity, improving overall network efficiency.
To communicate its technology effectively to customers, EE plans to use the term 5G+ instead of the industry-specific 5G SA, aiming for clearer understanding and relatability. A recent report indicated that improved mobile connectivity could contribute up to £230 billion to the UK economy.
EE underscored the importance of government support in realizing its ambitious plans for 5G+ coverage, advocating for a Mobile Market Review to facilitate faster deployments, reform spectrum availability, and reconsider spectrum licensing fees. Despite aiming for 99% coverage, addressing specific connectivity challenges will remain a priority.
As part of BT Group’s mission, EE seeks to ensure reliable connectivity across the UK, integrating advanced technologies and enhancing mobile coverage to support economic growth and development.
