Cambium Receives Contract from DARPA to Develop AI-Driven Polymer Composites
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Cambium secured a contract with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop foundational materials Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities. The project will focus on identifying novel bio-enabled extreme-performance polymer composites.
The initiative aims to utilize Generative AI (GenAI) to address the longstanding trade-off between thermal stability and mechanical strength in structural composites. Cambium and DARPA intend to find commercially viable ultra-lightweight polymers that can replace structural titanium in high-performance applications.
This project will tackle issues that previous Machine Learning (ML) efforts faced, such as the lack of specialized polymer data. By leveraging novel multimodal AI architectures, Cambium aims to enhance its existing AI-driven materials discovery and development platform, supporting defense requirements and commercial markets in sectors like automotive, aerospace, and energy.
