Sony acquires STATSports to enhance sports technology offerings.

Sony Corporation announced the acquisition of STATSports Group, a provider of athlete monitoring solutions, enhancing its sports technology portfolio. The majority stake investment allows Sony to integrate STATSports’ wearable technologies with its existing optical tracking systems. This development aims to improve performance analysis capabilities for various sports teams.

Founded in 2008, STATSports services over 800 professional sports teams globally, including clubs such as Arsenal Fibre Channel (FC) and Liverpool FC, as well as national teams like England and Portugal. Its solutions utilize a range of tracking technologies, including GPS and heart rate monitors, providing real-time performance metrics to athletes.

The acquisition aligns with Sony’s strategy to incorporate comprehensive tracking technologies into its sports services. Rufus Hack, CEO of Hawk-Eye, noted that integrating STATSports’ wearable tech with Sony’s optical solutions would enhance performance analysis and fan engagement capabilities. Alan Clarke, CEO of STATSports, expressed that this partnership would accelerate their mission to enhance athlete performance through technology innovations.
