Verizon prepares its Hawai’i network for Tropical Storm Lala

Verizon prepared its Hawai’i network ahead of Tropical Storm Lala, with a focus on maintaining connectivity during severe weather. The plan centers on backup power coverage, added support options for communications, and coordination with Hawai’i Emergency Management Agency officials and other local stakeholders.

Verizon said it engineered a portion of its Hawai’i network infrastructure for severe-weather conditions, including backup power reserves and deployment options where permanent generators were not available. The company also described ongoing coordination intended to support critical communications if power disruptions occurred.

As part of its preparation strategy, Verizon said fully refueled permanent site generators with multiple days of backup power reserves supported a significant portion of its Hawai’i network infrastructure. Where permanent generators were not present, Verizon said it had portable generators and other backup solutions available for deployment. It also referenced satellite assets that Verizon engineers could dispatch in response to potential commercial power loss or third-party fiber disruptions.

Verizon said it worked with local power companies, HIEMA, and state public safety officials to remain on constant standby for critical communications. The company also directed customers to use digital preparedness plans that included charging devices early, protecting equipment from rain and floodwaters, establishing a communication plan with emergency contacts, checking on kūpuna, securing visual backups, downloading critical weather and safety apps, and maintaining lists and documents for disruption mitigation. Verizon said it would continue monitoring Tropical Storm Lala and provide local network status updates, with customers able to track real-time status using a “Check Network Status” tool on Verizon’s website or in the My Verizon mobile app.
