SAS helps climate innovator link families with global carbon markets

SAS and partner Notilyze worked with FairClimateFund to change how carbon credit reporting and verification were handled, replacing spreadsheet-based tracking with an automated monitoring and verification approach. The effort focused on improving transparency around carbon credit revenues tied to clean cooking projects.

FairClimateFund calculates CO2 reduction from switching from charcoal or open fire to a clean cooking solution as a carbon credit, with one credit representing one ton of CO2 reduced. The program described a goal of ensuring households, particularly women, received the greatest benefit from carbon credit sales, and it cited support for clean cooking projects that drove 1.5 million tons of CO2 reductions.

For FairClimateFund, the prior spreadsheet approach limited how quickly carbon credits could be issued and sold. Under the SAS and Notilyze partnership, monitoring and credit verification were digitized and automated to reduce costs per credit and enable more carbon credit revenue to flow directly to households. The Notilyze dMRV platform was described as built on a cloud native data and AI platform, using SASViya and running on Notilyze Cloud, and it draws on customer data, fuel pellet transactions, and cash-back refunds to households.

Notilyze created the Notilyze Digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) platform, which FairClimateFund used to monitor carbon credit values and transactions on a weekly basis. FairClimateFund also used the platform to provide a view of project impact, from total CO2 reductions to how clean cookstove initiatives contributed to key sustainable development goals. “Partnering with SAS has allowed us to create solutions that deliver meaningful outcomes at scale,” said Eric Mathura, Director Business Development, Notilyze. “By building the Notilyze dMRV platform on SAS Viya, we're able to support our customer in strengthening transparency and traceability while helping ensure community impact stays a top priority.” “Working with SAS and Notilyze has equipped us with the tools to increase transparency in reporting on carbon credits generated and the social impact it realizes for low-income households,” said Neera van der Geest, CEO, FairClimateFund.
