More About Viasat
Viasat focuses on Satellite Communications (Satcom) and related network services that support enterprise, government, and mobility scenarios where terrestrial connectivity is limited or unavailable. Its offerings are used by organizations that require broadband connectivity over wide geographic areas, coverage for remote locations, and service continuity across multiple regions and transport modes.
In the enterprise and institutional context, Viasat provides satellite-based internet access and managed network services that can function as primary connectivity for remote sites or as a resiliency layer alongside terrestrial networks. These services support use cases such as distributed retail operations, energy and mining facilities, maritime fleets, and remote offices, where consistent IP-based connectivity is required for applications, data transfer, and voice over IP. Viasat also serves airlines and aviation operators with in-flight connectivity and entertainment services, enabling passenger Wi‑Fi and real-time operational communications between aircraft and ground systems.
For government and defense customers, Viasat delivers secure communications solutions that span satellite bandwidth, network encryption, tactical datalinks, and managed services. These offerings align with mission communications, command and control, and secure data transport requirements. The company’s portfolio in this area typically integrates satellite payload capacity, ground segment infrastructure, and security technologies designed to support classified and unclassified traffic, interoperating with existing military and government networks.
Technically, Viasat operates high-capacity geostationary satellites and associated ground networks that use IP networking, radio frequency communications, and satellite access technologies. Its solutions rely on standard internet protocols for end-user connectivity while incorporating traffic management, Quality of Service (QoS), and acceleration techniques tailored for high-latency satellite links. Customer access is delivered through a range of terminals and antennas, including fixed-site dishes for residential and enterprise locations, airborne antennas for aircraft, and maritime terminals for vessels.
Within an enterprise IT and telecom taxonomy, Viasat maps to categories such as satellite connectivity and backhaul (networking), managed Wide Area Network (WAN) and internet access (network services), secure government and defense communications (security and networking), and mobility connectivity for aviation and maritime (mobility networking). Its portfolio combines space segment capacity, ground infrastructure, and service platforms, enabling organizations and agencies to integrate satellite connectivity into hybrid network architectures and multi-domain communications strategies.
