UARNet, the Ukrainian Academic and Research Network, operates as a research and education network (REN) with a focus on providing IP connectivity and network services to universities, research institutes, and education-sector organizations in Ukraine. Its infrastructure is used as a transport layer for internet access, collaboration tools, and academic applications that require stable IP routing and coordination across multiple campuses and regions. For enterprise and institutional stakeholders, UARNet functions as a sector-oriented service provider that aggregates demand from higher-education and research institutions onto a dedicated backbone.

The organization’s core services center on IP networking (networking), including IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity, IP transit, and routing services based on standard internet protocols such as Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) for inter-domain routing and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) for end-to-end communication. UARNet manages backbone links connecting regional nodes and institutional access points, and it peers with other research and education networks and global IXP to provide international reach for Ukrainian academic and research traffic. This positioning aligns UARNet with the broader ecosystem of national research and education networks that interconnect via pan-European and global REN infrastructures.

In addition to backbone connectivity, UARNet provides domain registration and DNS services (domain and DNS services) for institutional domains, including subdomains within the Ukrainian country-code domain space. These services cover authoritative DNS hosting, zone management, and the operation of DNS servers that support reliable name resolution for connected organizations. For IT architects in universities and research bodies, this enables integrated management of institutional namespaces alongside network connectivity.

UARNet also offers hosting and colocation capabilities (infrastructure services), providing server housing, rack space, power, and network access within its facilities. Institutions can place critical infrastructure, such as web servers, mail systems, and research data services, within UARNet data centers while leveraging direct high-bandwidth connections to the academic network backbone. This approach reduces the need for each institution to maintain separate external-facing hosting environments and simplifies network design and security zoning.

Network operations and technical support (network operations) form another service area, encompassing monitoring of backbone links, traffic flows, and availability, along with coordination during outages or maintenance windows. UARNet’s role includes managing routing policies, addressing plans, and service provisioning for member institutions. For enterprise-grade planning, UARNet can be categorized under carrier and service provider networking, research and education networking, DNS and domain services, and infrastructure hosting for academic and research workloads.
