More About Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa) (RNP)
Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP) functions as Brazil’s national research and education network, providing high-capacity connectivity and digital services to universities, federal institutes, research centers, and public organizations. Its infrastructure is designed to support data-intensive scientific workloads, academic collaboration, and access to national and international research resources. RNP interconnects institutions across Brazil through an IP backbone and regional networks, enabling integration with global research and education networks through standard internet and academic peering arrangements.
In enterprise and institutional environments, RNP’s offerings are typically used by public universities, research laboratories, and education systems that require stable, high-bandwidth connectivity and specialized services that differ from commercial internet access. The network architecture uses widely adopted internet protocols such as Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) for routing, and IPv4/IPv6 addressing, with support for VPNs and other secure connectivity models. RNP also provides value-added networking services such as Traffic Engineering (TE) and performance monitoring suited to academic and scientific applications.
Beyond transport, RNP operates service platforms for communication and collaboration (collaboration tools), such as web conferencing, messaging, and digital learning support services that are targeted to education and research use cases. These services align with categories like unified communications, e-learning support, and academic collaboration platforms. Institutions use them to support distance education, distributed research projects, and national academic programs that require shared infrastructure and standardized tools.
RNP also maintains cybersecurity and identity management services (security and IAM), which typically include federated identity frameworks, authentication and authorization mechanisms, and incident response coordination for connected organizations. These services are designed to integrate institutional identity providers with national and international academic federations, enabling Single Sign-On (SSO) to shared scientific instruments, data repositories, and collaboration systems. Common security practices such as encrypted transport, access control policies, and network monitoring are part of this operational scope.
Within an enterprise technology directory, RNP can be categorized under national research and education networks (NREN), wide-area networking services (WAN and backbone connectivity), academic collaboration and communications services (collaboration tools), cybersecurity and identity federation services (security and IAM), and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) R&D support (ICT R&D services). Its role is to provide the networking and service substrate on which Brazilian education and research institutions build their own applications, platforms, and scientific environments, aligning with international research and education networking practices.
