Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, completed the F135 Engine Core Upgrade Risk Reduction Design Review, a milestone intended to validate the maturity of the engine core upgrade design as the effort moves toward production.
The review assessed detailed design elements and risk-reduction activities tied to delivering full engine life and adding power and thermal management needed for advanced sensors, weapons, and other Block 4 and beyond capabilities across all three F-35 Lightning II variants. It also examined readiness in the industrial base for future production and retrofit.
Pratt & Whitney said the RRDR evaluated propulsion technologies, integration considerations, and thermal management needs associated with the ECU. The company described the ECU as a drop-in upgrade for both new-production and fielded aircraft, with incorporation at production or retrofit at F135 depot facilities.
Work under the risk reduction effort, supported by a contract awarded in 2024, focused on design maturation, aircraft integration, test preparation, supply-base readiness, and related engineering activities. Jill Albertelli said completing RRDR demonstrated the maturity of the ECU and progress toward delivering the capability, while U.S. Navy Capt. Mitch Grant said the review showed mature ECU design and kept the program on track to support modernization to outpace adversaries.
