Nokia launched its new high-capacity shelves for the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), aimed at addressing increasing bandwidth demands. This addition enhances existing deployments, providing operators with a cost-effective method to scale their networks.

The new 1830 PSS high-capacity shelves deliver three times higher density and reduce power consumption per bit by up to 60%. This design supports seamless integration with current 1830 PSS systems and offers capabilities to handle the latest coherent optical engines.

According to Vivek Gaur, EVP at Colt, the 1830 PSS-hc shelves present a natural progression for current infrastructure, helping to meet growing capacity requirements. Ron Johnson, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Optical Networks at Nokia, noted that the shelves will enable operators to deploy high-speed services swiftly in response to increased customer demand. The shelves are expected to be commercially available in Q2-2026, with customer trials commencing in late 2025.
