Nokia expands partnership with TIM Brasil to modernize 5G network

Nokia expanded its partnership with TIM Brasil to modernize the operator’s 5G network, a program intended to ready the infrastructure for AI-based connectivity across additional regions.

The companies said the expansion followed TIM Brasil’s investment in São Paulo and would extend modernization nationwide to cover roughly 42% of the country’s population, adding work in 14 states across four regions and enabling delivery of AI-based connectivity solutions to the enterprise sector.

Nokia planned to deploy its AirScale portfolio and related services, citing AirScale baseband, Habrok Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radios, Pandion Remote Radio Heads, and AirScale Radio small cell solutions; the agreement also included implementation of MantaRay SON to automate routine operations through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analytics, improve network quality, and reduce operational costs.

The modernization targeted urban areas including Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Goiânia, Manaus, Belém, and São Luís, and the companies said they would jointly explore AI use cases such as intelligent slicing, image/video analysis and recognition, voice recognition, and threat detection for B2B verticals including Mining, Agribusiness, manufacturing, logistics, and transport.

“Like telecom, AI has become essential infrastructure, transforming every industry in its wake. As telecom networks evolve to become AI-native, they unlock entirely new opportunities for innovation and growth”, said Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President of Telecommunications at NVIDIA.

The companies said the work would prepare TIM Brasil’s network for future advancements including 5G Advanced, 6G, and advanced AI-driven services.
