Nokia expands partnership with SoftBank on network modernization

Nokia expanded its partnership with SoftBank Corp. to modernize and enhance 4G and 5G networks in Japan. The agreement focuses on upgrading existing infrastructure and expanding 5G coverage, utilizing Nokia's AirScale portfolio.

The collaboration will deploy energy-efficient AirScale Radio Access Network (RAN) solutions featuring Habrok Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radios and AirScale baseband equipment across Western Japan. The implementation will also incorporate Nokia's AI-powered MantaRay solution for improved network management.

Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Networks at Nokia, stated, “This expanded collaboration with SoftBank demonstrates the strength of our long-standing partnership.” Hideyuki Tsukuda, Executive Vice President and CTO at SoftBank, added that the partnership aims to deliver an efficient and sustainable 5G network for enhanced user experience.

Nokia and SoftBank are also involved in Research and Development (R&D) initiatives in AI-RAN and 6G technologies, conducting tests in the 7 GHz frequency band in Tokyo, furthering their joint focus on advanced networking solutions.
