Hitachi Vantara, an infrastructure and hybrid cloud management subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd., set a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goal for its global value chain by fiscal year 2040. The company also reported that its near- and long-term emissions reduction targets received independent validation by the Science Based Targets initiative.

The announcement tied the FY2040 commitment to science-based emissions reduction milestones and positioned the validation as a way to confirm alignment with the standards used for target setting. The PR also cited energy efficiency and conservation as measures that can reduce electricity consumption, including cooling systems’ share of data center electricity use.

Hitachi Vantara described validated targets that cover Scope 1 and 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. For near-term goals, it committed to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions 98% by FY2030 from an FY2024 baseline year, and to reduce Scope 3 emissions 51% per usable petabyte of storage capacity sold by FY2036. For long-term goals, it committed to reduce Scope 3 emissions 97% per usable petabyte of storage capacity sold by FY2040 compared with the FY2024 baseline year.

The PR said the milestone built on sustainability progress including a 43% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions in FY2025, attributed largely to obtaining 50% of its energy from renewable sources. It also referenced expanded lifecycle sustainability initiatives across Virtual Storage Platform One and efforts to align the broader product portfolio with the Hitachi Eco-Design Management Guidelines. “Customers increasingly expect their technology suppliers to demonstrate that their climate commitments are credible and backed by action,” said Simon Ninan, senior vice president of business strategy, Hitachi Vantara. “Our commitment to achieve net zero by FY2040 sets a clear direction and holds us accountable to measurable progress.”
