Google Cloud plans TalayLink subsea cable and connectivity hubs in Australia and Thailand

Google Cloud disclosed plans for the TalayLink subsea cable system, designed to link Australia and Thailand as part of its broader Australia Connect infrastructure program across the Indo-Pacific region. The company has not specified a completion timeline for this project.

The development aims to establish a lower-latency communication route to Thailand via the Indian Ocean, avoiding existing network congestion points west of the Sunda Strait. This path is expected to complement Google’s data centers and upcoming Cloud Region in Thailand aligned with expanding digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) service demands.

TalayLink will be supported by two dedicated connectivity hubs: one in Mandurah, Western Australia, providing a diversified landing point alternative to the Perth region; and another in South Thailand, positioned at a major subsea cable intersection. The South Thailand hub is a collaborative effort with Artificial Intelligence Security (AIS), involving the International Gateway Company (IGC), a subsidiary of ALT Telecom, to handle cable landing operations. These hubs offer cable switching, caching, and colocation functionalities intended to enhance network resilience and scalability.

The new infrastructure elements will add to previously announced connectivity hubs in the Maldives and Christmas Island, contributing to network stability across Australia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Collectively, these investments aim to improve connectivity across the Indian Ocean corridor.

“The TalayLink cable will serve as a pivotal piece of digital infrastructure, enhancing Thailand’s connectivity and resilience. Together with Google’s upcoming Google Cloud region and data center in Thailand, these forward‑looking investments will significantly expand regional network and computing capacity, while firmly positioning Thailand as a critical digital gateway for next‑generation cloud and AI innovation in Southeast Asia. The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) is fully committed to supporting Google’s investment in Thailand, fostering the growth of the nation’s digital economy, and advancing digital skills to ensure inclusive and sustainable development,” said Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary General of the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI).

Pratthana Leelapanang, Chief Executive Officer of AIS, said, “AIS is excited to be extending our relationship with Google as a strategic partner by supporting the connectivity hub in Southern Thailand. The combination of Google’s new, diverse submarine cable path and AIS’s high-reliability colocation capabilities will ensure the digital infrastructure in the region is capable of supporting the country’s AI strategy.”

Preeyaporn Tangpaosak, President of ALT Telecom, expressed, “International Gateway Company (IGC), a subsidiary of ALT Telecom PLC, is delighted to be a key Google partner in landing a new submarine cable in Thailand. IGC brings to the project its extensive experience operating a nationwide network and international cable gateway. This cable is an important new piece of digital infrastructure that will accelerate Thailand’s ambitious digital economy development strategy.”
