Google Cloud partnerships with NATO NCIA to provide sovereign cloud for AI workloads
Google Cloud has finalized a contract with the NATO Communication and Information Agency (NCIA) to supply secure cloud infrastructure aimed at enhancing NATO's digital systems.
This agreement addresses NATO's need to advance its operational framework by incorporating secure data governance and facilitating the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies within its digital modernization efforts.
The solution involves Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) air-gapped environments, which are isolated from external networks to ensure data sovereignty and heightened security. This platform provides the capability to process AI and analytics workloads on sensitive data without compromising operational control or compliance requirements.
NCIA intends to deploy the GDC air-gapped system to support the Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC), thereby modernizing classified workload operations. Implementation of this technology is expected in the upcoming months, offering a secure and resilient cloud environment tailored to meet NATO’s security standards.
“Google Cloud is dedicated to supporting NATO's critical mission to develop a robust and resilient infrastructure and harness the latest technology innovations,” said Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud EMEA. Antonio Calderon, Chief Technology Officer at NCIA, said, “Partnership with industry is a critical component of our digital transformation strategy. Through this collaboration, we will deliver a secure, resilient and scalable cloud environment for JATEC that meets the highest standards required to protect highly sensitive data.”
The contract reflects Google Cloud's provision of sovereign cloud services that combine physical data isolation with integrated AI capabilities, aligning with NATO's requirements for operational autonomy at scale.
