Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. said its Peruvian subsidiary, Gilat Perú, signed a $28 million agreement to upgrade broadband connectivity in Peru’s Ica region. The work supports connectivity for public institutions and free internet access for communities in the area, with construction expected to finish by mid-year 2027.
According to the company, the Ica effort is the fifth regional broadband network upgrade in Peru since 2025. The upgraded network is expected to provide internet speeds 20 times faster than speeds currently available to 116 public institutions in the region, and it is planned to provide free Wi-Fi access in 30 public squares.
Gilat Perú said the project will strengthen network capacity to address connectivity needs across different locations and operating environments. The company also stated that the upgraded infrastructure will support public institutions in accessing and delivering digital services, including education, healthcare, and public safety, while providing a foundation for the region’s evolving connectivity needs.
Gilat Perú described the project as part of its experience deploying, upgrading and operating large-scale telecommunications networks across Peru, including rural and geographically diverse areas. Rafael Arias Velarde, Executive Director of PRONATEL, said, “This project to increase connectivity speeds in Ica will strengthen connectivity for public institutions and expand free internet access for citizens. Through PRONATEL, the Ministry of Transport and Communications continues to advance initiatives aimed at translating greater connectivity capacity into better services and opportunities for people, helping to bridge the digital divide,” and Arieh Rohrstock, President of Gilat Perú, said, “Gilat Perú has built this expertise through years of deploying, upgrading and operating large-scale networks across the country. We are proud to bring that experience to Ica, strengthening the infrastructure that connects public institutions and expanding internet access for communities across the region.” The company’s forward-looking statements included expectations for project timing and operations.
