Globe participates in GSMA Intelligence's Green Network Index study
Globe has participated in GSMA Intelligence's Green Network Index study, aimed at establishing industry benchmarks for network sustainability. The initiative seeks to aid telecom operators in improving energy efficiency and integrating renewable energy practices.
Globe is one of only six telecom companies worldwide involved in this inaugural project. The company's engagement reflects its commitment to researching greener networks and reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) in the industry.
Yoly Crisanto, Globe's Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer, stated, “We recognize the importance of collaboration in shaping a more sustainable telecom sector. Our contribution to the GNI study reflects our commitment to integrating sustainable practices that strengthen both our industry and our journey toward Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions.”
Apple Evangelista, Globe's Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, noted, “Through the GNI, we are gaining valuable insights that will help us refine our approach to energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and overall network sustainability.”
Support for greener telecom networks is expanding, with a majority of telecom operators, covering 70% of industry revenues, aligning their commitments with the Science-Based Targets Initiative to reduce GHG. Rising energy costs, which make up 15-20% of a telco's operational expenses, underscore the urgency for improved energy efficiency.
GSMAi created the Green Network Index to consolidate various factors into a single figure, enhancing comparability across telecom operators and aiding companies in their green initiatives.
Tim Hatt, Head of Research at GSMA Intelligence, remarked, “Tracking progress on mobile network operators' energy sustainability is critical in driving meaningful change. Our Green Network Index helps operators to achieve that goal by enabling them to make informed decisions that support a greener, more sustainable future.”
The GNI Study reports on energy and carbon efficiency, renewable energy use, performance, and enablement within the telecom sector.
The initial round of the GNI Study is available for download on GSMAi's website for those interested in registering for a free public account.
Globe is engaged in various sustainability efforts and is a participant in the United Nations Global Compact, focusing on several UN Sustainable Development Goals. The company has set validated near-term and net-zero greenhouse gas emission reduction targets through the Science-Based Targets Initiative.
