Digital Realty opens first Barcelona data center BCN1
Digital Realty opened BCN1, its first data center in Barcelona, in the Sant Adrià de Besòs area. The company framed the move as part of expanding connectivity across the Mediterranean and positioning Barcelona within a network of other European interconnection locations.
BCN1 is planned with 14 MW of total capacity. Digital Realty said the site was designed to connect with a range of network providers and to support low-latency connectivity between the Americas, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
Digital Realty said Barcelona supports regional network links through subsea cable landing connections with Marseille and cross-border fiber links to Marseille and Frankfurt. The company also said BCN1 complements its existing Marseille campus by adding network diversity and resilience across the region.
Digital Realty said BCN1 extends its PlatformDIGITAL® global data center platform. The company also referenced its Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact signatory status and described BCN1’s energy efficiency approach as including advanced power and cooling architectures, renewable energy procurement, and backup generators fueled by HVO100.
“Barcelona is emerging as a world-class digital gateway to the Mediterranean. Digital Realty’s Barcelona Campus puts us right at the heart of that transformation, built to the highest sustainability standards. Together with our campuses in Madrid and Lisbon, we are proud to offer our customers a highly interconnected and environmentally responsible regional platform on the Iberian Peninsula”, said Fabrice Coquio, Senior Vice President, Managing Director, Europe Med, Digital Realty. The company also said it expects BCN1 will help businesses scale AI deployments and data localizations in a sustainable manner.
